It has been announced that the Kyrgyzstan Government’s Cabinet of Ministers has designated the Ministry of Economy and Commerce responsible for development and implementation of a cluster policy to work on a cluster of 22 ski areas in the country’s Issyk-Kul region over the next five years. No further details on the scale of any of the areas have been released.
Known as the ”warm lake”, despite being located at an altitude of 1,600m, the Issyk-Kul lake is the world’s 10th largest and is over 180km long with a shoreline of more than 660km. It is the second-largest mountain lake in the world behind Lake Titicaca in South America. The lake’s southern shore is dominated by the ruggedly beautiful Teskey Ala-Too Range of the Tian Shan mountains. The highest peak here is Karakol (5,216m / 17,113 ft)
The region was located on the Silk Road and during the era when Kyrgyzstan was part of the Soviet Union the region was a popular vacation destination but since independence its popularity has waned and the government are looking to reinvigorate its popularity.
Wikipedia states, “The region, which resembles the Alps or Colorado, would be a major tourist destination were it not for its remoteness and underdeveloped infrastructure.”
The aim is to get the ski areas operational by 2028.
