Kyrgyzstan, a landlocked country in Central Asia, is blessed with abundant renewable energy resources, including hydro, solar, and wind power. Frankfurt, London (12/08 – 80) It seems that the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has become a hostage to its investments in Tajikistan. In mid-July, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) appealed to the Supreme Economic Court of Tajikistan with a demand to annul the land certificate for the campus of the University of Central Asia in Khorog, which is owned by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). The university’s administration, local authorities, and the prosecutor’s office have not commented on this matter. Mongolia’s recent decision to adopt SpaceX’s Starlink internet services is stirring security concerns across the border in China, both as a potential military threat and a possible way around Beijing’s strict censorship regime on perceived as “harmful” foreign websites. On July 6, the Communications Regulatory Commission of Mongolia issued special licenses for SpaceX, founded by American billionaire tycoon Elon Musk, to operate as a service provider using low-orbit satellites and for Starlink to provide internet services in the country. The decision, part of the country’s ongoing digital transformation and New Recovery Policy, was announced ahead of the annual Mongolia Economic…
TIR, the only global transit system, is now bringing additional efficiency and security to China’s booming e-commerce trade.A truck loaded with a wide range of e-commerce goods has completed its journey from China’s inland city of Kashgar to Kyrgyzstan. Earlier this month, Kyrgyz Facebook user Kamchybek Tashiyev took to his account and posted a crudely worded, two-line status update. “No to ‘matronymics,” whoever backed them should cancel [their decision]! That is my civic position!” he wrote without elaborating further. Tashiyev is no ordinary citizen, though. He is the head of the State Committee for National Security, the successor agency to the KGB. The decision he was referring to was a June 30 ruling by the Constitutional Court to allow citizens to be permitted, once they reach the age of 18, to adopt their mother’s name to form a matronymic.…

The Kyrgyz authorities are seeking to introduce controls over the screening of audio-visual materials during festivals, conferences and trainings, in a move that rights’ groups consider a further restriction of basic freedoms. The ministry of culture is working on a draft resolution that would introduce a mandatory state license for any video material to be screened publicly. This would extend the current rules, which apply only to film distribution. The amendments would require film facilities, distributors, festivals and workshop organisers to obtain permission from the Film Centre Kyrgyztasmasy state enterprise. Rights’ groups, including Bir Duino, the Media Policy Institute and the legal…
