Speaker of the Parliament Nurlanbek Shakiev took part in a joint meeting of the Council for sustainable development during climate change and development partners on May 22.
“The global climate has changed in recent years, there is a clear upward trend in average annual air temperature. A serious threat of melting glaciers and a decrease in snow cover exists, which will lead to a reduction in available water resources. There is an urgent need to take measures to protect the environment and natural resources,” he noted.
Kyrgyzstan pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43.62% in accordance with the Paris Agreement, the Speaker recalled.
“We need to implement large-scale projects for the construction of hydroelectric power plants and the development of renewable energy sources,” he stressed, adding that it is also important to focus on cooperation with international donors and to introduce innovative and modern technologies through public-private partnerships.
The event was attended by MPs, heads of ministries and departments, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov, representatives of the non-governmental and civil sectors, international organizations, trade unions.
